On Thursday, March the 26th 2015, the Science Students’ Association held its first Annual Opening Function/Launch at Madibaz restaurant, South Campus. Although the function was held in a time of paramount academic pressure, over 60 students from different Departments in the Faculty attended.

The occasion was productive, vibrant and fun-filled with entertainment from our members; Masivuye Mahleba (3rd year BSc Geosciences), Siyabulela Finca (3rd year BSc Biological Sci.) and Vuyo Tshingila (3rd year NDip Analytical Chem.)

SCI-SA extends its heartfelt gratitude and appreciation to the acting Dean of Science, Prof Cedric McCleland and guest speaker of the day, Dr Richard Betz, who sacrificed time from their busy schedules and honoured us with their attendance and support. Further gratitude is extended to our sponsors; NMMU Faculty of Science and Zeipher Photography and to the entertainers; whose performance bore scientific consciousness and substance. They really did prove that Science is a lifestyle.

The organisation is still in its infancy stages and has the objective of contributing to the better understanding of Science, advocating for student vibrancy from different departments and scientific interdisciplinary involvements. Thus promoting cohesive work in assisting the institution towards attaining the objectives of Vision2020. The Society also presents a platform for members to exercise their skills and talents that might be suppressed due to having no relation with their chosen field of study. SCI-SA is a platform for everyone to help in the quest of discovery and becoming responsible leaders. As the 2015 Chairperson, Maboni Mmatli said, “We should strive to be leaders of creation, initiative and possibilities. Ready to change lives and write success stories in the books of history”.  Our mission is to promote Science not just as a study field, but a lifestyle.
