The School of Natural Resource Management, Nelson Mandela University, George Campus hosted the 2019 conference of the Southern African Wildlife Management Association (SAWMA) from the 1st to the 5th of September. Dr Jan Venter from the School of Natural Resource Management, George Campus was the host organizer of SAWMA 2019 conference which was held at the Wilderness Hotel in Wilderness, Western Cape.

SAWMA is dedicated to the conservation and wise management of the wildlife resources of southern Africa, and one of its objectives is to provide a forum for communication between wildlife managers in Southern Africa. The SAWMA conference was a great opportunity for students, academics, experts and wildlife managers to share knowledge on different species and management approaches.

The conference was opened by Prof Leitch (DVC – Research Nelson Mandela University), and the keynote speakers were Dr Tineke Kraaij (Nelson Mandela University), Dr Chloe Guerbois (Nelson Mandela University), Prof Jim Hone (Australasian Wildlife Management Society) and Prof HervĂ© Fritz (Nelson Mandela University). The delegates could learn from a wide array of different topics as the themes of the conference were biodiversity, conservation, management and extreme events. Given the location of the conference it was the perfect opportunity for delegates to learn more about the recent destructing George Fires in 2018 and the effect it has on the wildlife.

The famous student quiz was hosted on Monday evening and the prizes were sponsored by Plaas Media. The quiz is a chance for students to fight for the title against their peers from multiple universities but each team is only as strong as their general knowledge. George Campus is proud to announce that for the third consecutive year, students from Nelson Mandela University has won the student quiz. This year it was the (Still) No Eye Deer team that won the competition, and their team consists of members Christopher Brooke, Francis Martens and Mika Vermeulen.

Overall the conference was a great success and we would like to thanks our sponsors as we could not do it without them. The sponsors were the Nelson Mandela University, Fynbos Trust, Australasian Wildlife Management Society, Plaas Media, Briza, Wildlife Pharmaceuticals, HPH Publishing, Global Supplies, SACNASP and BioOne.
