Aphiwe Magaya – Vice Chairperson

Aphiwe Magaya holds a Bachelor of Honours degree in Mathematical Statistics from Nelson Mandela University. He is currently doing his second year Master of Science (MSc) in Mathematical Statistics and his research is on power output prediction of photovoltaic (PV) systems using machine learning regression models. He is tutoring students in mathematics and statistics while also assisting students on practicals, and invigilation in the computing sciences department. He is a postgraduate representative in the Department of Statistics and holds a Vice Chairperson position in the Science Postgraduate Student Representatives Forum (SPSF). He has volunteered at Leonard Cheshire Home Disability in Summerstrand and also volunteered to scribe for disabled students at Nelson Mandela University. He is also part of a project with AdLinc company using his data analytics skills to contribute to the success of the project. He is an aspiring data scientist and his love for numbers has driven him into this career field. He fell in love with mathematics and science from Grade 10 whereby both his local high school teachers and those who taught him at an after-school programme inspired him more in the subjects. The inspiration behind all of that he has done thus far is to empower many young people, especially in Africa to occupy spaces in the field of science because there is a lot that needs to be discovered and done. He believes that there is so much potential out there which is why he keeps on going back to the community. Apart from academics, he enjoys running, culinary arts, poem writing, and spending time outdoors with nature. One of his favourites quotes says,” never forget the life you once promised yourself.”
