The Nelson Mandela University hosted the 2019 National Science Week. The NSW2019 is an annual event presented by the Department of Science and Technology since its inception in 2002. On 26 July we had a virtual visit underground to the ATLAS detector, hosted by Claire Lee and Candice Basson.

Dr Thomas Dietel, from the University of Cape Town in collaboration with the Faculty of Science, presented a seminar on “CERN and South Africa”. The talk was informed by the research done at CERN and the contributions from South Africa, highlighting the possibilities for students and staff to visit CERN and get involved with the research work done there.
The seminar was followed by a one-hour CERN virtual Tour hosted by Dr Claire Lee from Brookhaven National Laboratory. She was interacting with audience in Port Elizabeth live from the Large Hadron Collider at CERN, Geneva Switzerland.
Learners from three high schools in Port Elizabeth, namely, Ndzondelelo High School, Douglas Mabophe Secondary School and Ethembeni Enrichmnt Centre were afforded an opportunity to learn more about particle physics.
